Who Is Your Guide?

Primary Text: Jeremiah 10:23

“O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.”

One of the most important questions a person can ask is not: “Where am I going?” But rather: “Who is leading me?”

Many of life’s greatest regrets are not the result of bad intentions. They are the result of wrong direction. People choose careers. Relationships. Business ventures. Friendships. Places to live. Major life decisions. And only later discover that sincerity is not the same as wisdom.

Jeremiah reached a profound realization: Man is not capable of perfectly directing his own path.We need a Guide.

The Problem With Self-Guidance

Human beings are intelligent. Creative. Capable.Yet we are also limited. We do not know the future. We cannot see every consequence. We often make decisions based on emotions, assumptions, or incomplete information. What feels right today may prove disastrous tomorrow. That is why Scripture warns: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” The greatest danger is not always obvious evil. Sometimes it is sincere confidence in our own judgment.

The Myth of “Following Your Heart”

Our culture frequently says,”Just follow your heart.” The Bible gives a different warning. The heart can be influenced by fear, Pride, Anger, Greed, Bitterness, Desire. Without God’s guidance, our hearts can lead us into places we never intended to go. A compass that is slightly off course may seem accurate at first, but over time it leads far from the destination. The same is true of a life guided only by self.

God Sees What We Cannot

One reason we can trust God’s direction is that He sees the entire journey. We see the present. He sees the future. We see the obstacle. He sees the purpose. We see the delay. He sees the timing. Many of God’s instructions make sense only in hindsight. What seemed like a closed door was protection. What seemed like a delay was preparation. What seemed like a disappointment was redirection.

How Does God Guide Us?

God primarily guides us through: His Word. His Holy Spirit. Godly counsel. Prayer. Circumstances that align with His truth.

God’s guidance will never contradict His Word. The believer who neglects Scripture should not be surprised when direction becomes unclear. The more familiar we become with God’s voice, the more confidently we can follow His leading.

The Danger of Partial Obedience

Sometimes we ask God for guidance when we have already decided what we want to do.We are not seeking direction. We are seeking approval.True guidance requires surrender. We must be willing to follow wherever God leads—even when His way differs from our preferences.

Practical Christian Response

Before making important decisions: Pray for wisdom. Search the Scriptures. Seek godly counsel. Examine your motives. Wait on God’s timing. Be willing to obey even when the path is uncomfortable. Ask yourself: Am I following God’s direction, or merely pursuing my own desires?

Reflection

Every day we are being guided by something. Ambition. Fear. Popularity. Money. Personal desires. Or God.

The question is not whether we have a guide. The question is whether our guide can be trusted. Jeremiah looked at the limitations of human wisdom and concluded:”The way of man is not in himself.” What a liberating truth. The burden of directing our lives was never meant to rest entirely upon us.

Key Verse

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)

Closing Thought

A traveller without a guide may move quickly and still become lost. A traveller with a trustworthy guide may move slowly and still arrive safely. Life is filled with crossroads. Some decisions will affect years, even decades, of our future. At those moments, the most important question is not: “What do I want?” Nor is it: “What is everyone else doing?” The question is: “Lord, what would You have me do?” For the safest path is not the path we choose for ourselves. It is the path chosen by the One who knows the end from the beginning.

So before you take the next step…Before you make the next decision…Before you choose the next direction…Pause and ask: Who is my guide?

Shalom.
