Even Your Enemy Can Lift You Up Again

Primary Text: Ezra 6:1-12

“Let the work on this house of God alone… Let the expenses be paid from the royal treasury.”

One of the greatest fears we face is opposition. We worry about those who stand against us.Those who criticize us.Those who seek to hinder our progress. Those who seem determined to make our lives difficult.

But Scripture repeatedly teaches a truth that is both comforting and astonishing: God’s plans are never limited by human opposition. In fact, there are times when God uses the very people who oppose us to accomplish His purposes.

The Temple Project Appeared Finished

The rebuilding of the Temple had encountered resistance. Accusations were made. Questions were raised. The enemies of Judah hoped the work would stop. From a human perspective, it looked as though the project might never be completed. But God’s purposes do not depend on human approval. What God has ordained, He is able to accomplish.

God Moved a Pagan King

King Darius ordered a search of the royal archives. There, the original decree of King Cyrus was discovered. Suddenly everything changed. Not only was the work permitted to continue…The king commanded that government funds be used to support it.The opposition expected cancellation. Instead, they witnessed confirmation. The enemies expected delay. Instead, they saw acceleration.

God Is Sovereign Over All Hearts

Sometimes we imagine that God only works through believers.Yet throughout Scripture, God uses kings, rulers, armies, strangers, and even opponents to accomplish His purposes. The heart of every ruler is ultimately under God’s authority. No person is beyond His reach. No circumstance is beyond His control. No opposition is greater than His power.

Your Enemy Is Not Your Greatest Problem

Many believers spend enormous energy focusing on those who oppose them. But the Bible repeatedly shifts our attention away from the enemy and toward God.The real question is not: “Who is against me?” The real question is: “Who is for me?” If God is for us, no enemy possesses ultimate authority over our future.

Sometimes God Uses Opposition to Advance Us

The opposition against the Temple did not destroy God’s plan. It became part of God’s plan. The investigation that was intended to stop the work resulted in official support for the work. What appeared to be a setback became a setup for greater blessing. Only God can do that.

Practical Christian Response

When facing opposition: Do not panic. Continue doing what God has called you to do. Refuse bitterness. Pray for those who oppose you.Trust God’s timing. Focus on obedience rather than revenge. Remember that God can change hearts you cannot change. Sometimes the person you fear most today may become the instrument God uses tomorrow.

Reflection

Joseph’s brothers sold him.Yet God used their actions to position him for leadership. Pharaoh oppressed Israel.Yet God’s power was revealed through Pharaoh’s resistance. The enemies of Judah sought to halt the Temple.Yet God used an empire to fund its completion. Again and again Scripture reminds us: God is never trapped by human hostility.

Key Verse

“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good…” (Genesis 50:20)

Closing Thought

Not every enemy will become your friend. Not every opponent will suddenly support you. But God does not require their cooperation to fulfil His purposes. And sometimes, in ways beyond our understanding, He chooses to use those very opponents as instruments of blessing.

So do not become consumed with who is against you. Fix your eyes on the God who reigns above every king, every ruler, every circumstance, and every opposition. The same God who used a foreign empire to rebuild His Temple is still at work today. He can open doors no enemy can close. He can provide resources from unexpected places. He can turn resistance into assistance. He can transform obstacles into opportunities. Because when God determines to lift His people, even an enemy can become part of the miracle.

Shalom.
