Primary Text: 2 Chronicles 20:17
“You will not need to fight this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD…”
One statement we often hear among Christians is: “Pray about everything.” At first glance, that sounds perfectly biblical. After all, Paul tells us in Philippians 4:6 to present our requests to God.
But does praying about everything mean we have no responsibility?
Can prayer replace preparation?
Can prayer replace obedience?
Can prayer replace wisdom?
Today’s message reminds us that before God fought Judah’s battle, He gave them one instruction:”Position yourselves.”
Prayer Does Not Remove Responsibility
King Jehoshaphat prayed.The nation prayed.They fasted. God answered. But God did not tell them,”Go back home.” He said, “Position yourselves.” They still had to get up.They still had to obey.They still had to stand where God instructed them.Faith did not eliminate action. Faith directed action.
Noah Prayed… But He Also Built
Imagine if Noah had said, “Lord, I believe You. Please save me.” Then never built the ark. Would prayer alone have saved him? No. His faith was demonstrated by obedience. For years, he built exactly what God commanded. Prayer moved him toward action.
Nehemiah Prayed… Then He Worked
When Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem’s walls were broken, he prayed. But he also made a plan. He sought permission. He gathered materials. He organized workers. He faced opposition. He kept building. Prayer gave him courage. Action fulfilled the assignment.
Faith Does Not Excuse Laziness
Suppose you have an examination. You pray earnestly.Then you refuse to study. When the results come, can you blame God?
Or suppose you open a business.You never research the market. You ignore your customers. You fail to train your staff.Then you pray every day for success. Is the problem a lack of prayer…Or a lack of preparation?
God rarely blesses carelessness simply because it is wrapped in prayer.
God Blesses Diligence
Scripture repeatedly commends diligence.The book of Proverbs praises the hardworking person. Paul instructed believers: “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” God delights in faithful effort. He has given us minds to think. Hands to work. Wisdom to learn. Prayer should inspire diligence, not replace it.
Position Yourself Spiritually
There is another kind of positioning. Before acting outwardly, position your heart.
Position yourself in humility.
Position yourself in obedience.
Position yourself in faith.
Position yourself where God can direct your steps.
Sometimes we ask God to guide us while refusing to move when He shows us the way.
Faith Works Through Obedience
Real faith says:”I will pray…Then I will do what God has entrusted to me.” The farmer prays for rain. But he also plants the seed.
The student prays for success. But also studies faithfully.
The business owner prays for growth. But also serves customers with excellence.
Prayer invites God’s blessing upon responsible obedience.
Practical Christian Response
Before every important decision: Pray sincerely.
Search the Scriptures.
Seek wise counsel.
Prepare diligently.
Work faithfully.
Trust God with the outcome.
Do not separate prayer from responsibility. God often works through the very effort He has called you to make.
Reflection
Sometimes we ask God to do what He has already commanded us to do. We pray for knowledge…But neglect to study. We pray for employment…But never submit an application. We pray for healthy relationships…But refuse to forgive. We pray for a successful business…But ignore honesty, planning, and excellence.
Faith is not waiting for God to do our part. Faith is doing our part while trusting God to do what only He can do.
Key Verse
“Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3)
Notice the order. Commit your work.There is work to commit.
Closing Thought
Prayer is one of the greatest gifts God has given His children. But prayer was never intended to replace obedience.
When God told Judah,”Position yourselves,” He was calling them to trust Him enough to stand where He directed. Today, God still says the same to us.
Study…Then pray.
Prepare…Then pray.
Work…Then pray.
Obey…Then pray.
And having prayed, stand in faith, knowing that the victory belongs to the Lord. Because God’s miracles are often experienced by people who first position themselves where He has called them to be.
