Primary Text: Galatians 4:1–2
“As long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything…”
One of the wonders of life is growth.
A baby is expected to grow.
A student is expected to learn.
An apprentice is expected to improve.
No one celebrates a child who remains an infant forever. Yet in the Christian life, many believers are content to remain where they were years ago.The same understanding.The same habits.The same spiritual maturity.The same weaknesses.
But God’s intention has never been that His children remain spiritual infants.Today’s message is simple: Growing is a must.
God Expects Growth
Paul tells us that an heir, while still a child, is practically no different from a servant. Not because he lacks an inheritance…But because he lacks maturity.The inheritance belongs to him.Yet he cannot fully enjoy or responsibly manage it.The lesson is clear. God desires not only that we belong to His family…But that we grow into maturity.
Growth Requires Learning
Growth never happens by accident. It requires instruction. Study. Correction. Practice.
A believer who neglects God’s Word should not be surprised if growth is slow.
Jesus prayed,”Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17). The Bible is not merely a book to own. It is a book to study, believe, and obey.
Ignorance Is Dangerous
The prophet Hosea wrote:”My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Notice…It was not a lack of sincerity. It was a lack of knowledge.
Ignorance leaves believers vulnerable. False teaching spreads where God’s Word is not known. Manipulation flourishes where discernment is absent. Fear grows where truth is lacking. God calls His people to know Him and His Word.
Growth Touches Every Area of Life
Christian growth is not only about knowing more Bible verses. It is about becoming more like Christ. Growing in love. Growing in humility. Growing in wisdom. Growing in patience. Growing in integrity. Growing in service.
A believer may have attended church for thirty years and still remain spiritually immature if Christlike character has not developed.
God Gives Us Gifts to Help Us Grow
Christ has given pastors, teachers, and other leaders to equip His people. Not so that believers remain dependent on them forever…But so that believers themselves become mature. A healthy church does not produce spectators. It produces disciples.
Growth Requires Humility
One of the greatest enemies of growth is the attitude: “I already know.”
The teachable believer keeps learning. Keeps asking questions. Keeps searching the Scriptures. Keeps allowing God to correct him.The older we become in Christ, the more humble we should become.
Practical Christian Response
If you want to grow:
Read the Scriptures daily.
Pray for understanding.
Join in the fellowship of believers.
Learn from faithful teachers.
Apply what you learn.
Welcome correction.
Never stop growing in character as well as knowledge.
Ask yourself regularly: Am I more like Christ today than I was a year ago?
Reflection
Every year we expect children to become stronger.
Employers expect workers to become more skilled.
Farmers expect crops to mature.
Should God expect anything less from His children? Growth is not optional. It is evidence of life. Where there is life, there should be development. Where there is faith, there should be increasing maturity.
Key Verse “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Closing Thought
God did not save you merely to remain where you were. He saved you to transform you.To renew your mind.To shape your character.To prepare you for the work He has called you to do.
Do not be satisfied with yesterday’s understanding. Do not become comfortable with spiritual infancy. Keep learning. Keep obeying. Keep serving. Keep becoming more like Christ. Because every day that God gives us is another opportunity to grow.
And remember this: Growing is not merely a good idea. For every follower of Christ, growing is a must.
